For the past 15 years, Yolanda Basden has been a loyal client of mine. When I first met her, her hair reached just below shoulder length, boasting fine to medium strands with a naturally kinky texture. Yolanda has always been diligent about caring for her hair between salon visits, faithfully following my recommendations. Despite our bi-weekly roller setting routine with minimal heat, I couldn’t help but notice her hair seemed thicker than usual. Can you tell us about your journey with using collagen powder for your hair? How did you first hear about it and what made you decide to try it?
About 6 years ago I was talking to a colleague who was using collagen for her hair, nails and skin. At that time I decided to purchase and try it as well.
How long have you been taking collagen powder specifically for your hair, and have you noticed any changes in your hair’s thickness and strength since starting?
I started taking collagen around 2018. I opted to take it in the powder form and mix it with water twice a day on an empty stomach. I was also told that vitamin C helps it to absorb better in the body and to make sure I consume 1000 mg daily.
Can you describe any specific improvements you’ve seen in your hair since incorporating collagen powder into your routine?
I notice my hair is the longest it's ever been and it is very thick even after having a relaxer.
Did you experience any challenges or concerns when starting to take collagen powder for your hair? How did you address ?
No I didn't have any challenges or concerns.
In addition to improvements in hair thickness and strength, have you noticed any other benefits to your hair or overall well-being from taking collagen powder?
I notice my hair doesn't shed much. I’ve also noticed that my nails grow fast.
Have you tried any other hair growth or strengthening treatments in conjunction with collagen powder? If so, how did they compare in terms of effectiveness?
No, I haven't tried any other hair growth treatments; however I do get regular treatments and trims at the salon which helps to provide shine and give my hair the added moisture it needs. I also regularly use Surishae + Co’s Pur Rose Hair Therapy Oil.
Lastly, for someone considering trying collagen powder for hair growth and strength, what advice or insights would you offer based on your experience?
I would say to make sure they are consistent with taking it. Also make sure to add vitamin C to your daily intake. I’m glad I decided to try it because I have definitely noticed the benefits.
